Julian Barnes’s story, adapted by Julia Stoneham, is a Swiss watch for radio.
Ably directed and produced by Tracey Neale, the two pieces concern a menage a trois between Gillian, Oliver and Stuart.
The prose is exquisite and the emotional interplay between the characters immaculate. Stuart is a hardworking everyman – with loads of empathy (but many weaknesses), while Oliver is the sort of man you only meet when his nappy is full. Gillian, the ‘fragrant’ go-between, is the fulcrum between the two men, their neuroseses and desires.
Beautifully played by Carl Prekopp, Nicholas Boulton and Hermione Norris; the two pieces are on BBC I – Player and are well worth checking out before disappearing into the ether.
